I think a lot of people believe to some degree that they're heroes of a very long adventure, meeting and parting with various people.
If you put in terms of fiction, it looks like a very epic saga.
But, I see it differently.
A man is a very small and ephemeral being, whose life would be summarized into a fifty-to-sixty page long short story.
It's just like you said, you've never heard of a short story being a best-seller?
It's true, in terms of sales, long stories sell more.
It's probably because many people want to believe that they are the hero of their own long fiction, but then they realize it won't happen.
So, I thought the reason they're pursuing a vast story is because they're looking for things that they can't do in real life.
Short stories are short indeed, but they are full of interesting things once you've read them.
Even if your life is not an epic saga, it is still enough to touch others.

I found this long quote in a random manga I picked from a website long ago. Though I didn't follow the story anymore, I liked this quote very much.
